AI website builder vs developer: calculate the handover cost

An AI website builder can produce a useful starting point, but the budget decision concerns the complete working website. Measure the remaining design, content, integration and testing work before comparing it with a developer quote.

Define what “finished” means

A generated homepage may look convincing while important tasks remain unresolved. Write down the visitor journey: understand the service, submit a request and receive confirmation, for example. Include the staff workflow after submission. The budget should cover that whole path.

For a brochure site with supplied content and simple forms, a builder may fit well. A custom application with permissions, billing rules or complex data flows needs a more detailed assessment. This is a scope decision, not a universal claim that AI output is either unusable or production-ready.

Run a trial against real requirements

Use non-sensitive example content and evaluate the result against a short acceptance checklist.

  • Can the intended editor change text, images and navigation reliably?
  • Do forms reach the correct destination, and are failures visible?
  • Are the mobile layout and keyboard interactions usable?
  • Can you configure page titles, URLs and other required publishing controls?
  • Do you control the domain and relevant accounts?
  • What happens to the content and functions if you leave the platform?

Verify capabilities in the current product and plan. A demonstration or marketing promise is not proof that your chosen configuration supports a particular workflow.

Count the work after generation

Use: subscription + setup work + corrections + integration + testing + handover. A fictional example needs 3 hours to generate and choose a direction, 8 hours to revise content and design, 5 hours to connect forms and 4 hours to test and document the site. That is 20 hours, not a three-hour project.

At your own planning value of $50 per hour, those hours represent $1,000 of time, before subscriptions and paid assets. The values are illustrative, not a measured benchmark. Record a trial on your actual brief if you want evidence of savings.

Compare that result with a developer proposal covering the same scope. A developer may also use AI tools; the relevant purchase is the agreed deliverable and responsibility for it, not an assumption about how it was produced.

Decide who owns the unfinished work

A builder is a reasonable choice when its supported workflow meets the brief and somebody has time to review, test and maintain the result. Professional help becomes more valuable when requirements exceed the platform's supported features or the team cannot own the remaining tasks.

Use the landing-page calculator for a defined campaign page. For a custom product, use the SaaS guide and identify requirements outside the model. Keep expected savings separate from results you have actually measured.
