WordPress website cost: separate software, hosting and work

A WordPress budget needs more than a software price. Account for the website you need built, the services it runs on and the work needed to keep the setup usable.

Identify which WordPress setup you mean

WordPress.org publishes the open-source software and hosting requirements. A managed hosted service or a supplier's WordPress package can bundle different things. Ask who provides hosting, which software is included and who maintains the installation before comparing totals.

Describe the site in plain language: five service pages, a blog, a contact form and two staff editors, for example. Then state whether content and branding already exist. The implementation team can propose a suitable setup without your brief becoming a shopping list of plugins.

Separate the budget into five parts

Budget lineWhat to specify
ImplementationTemplates, forms, responsive work, testing and handover
Hosting and domainRenewal terms, backups, staging and support
Theme and extensionsRequired licenses, renewal dates and account owner
ContentWriting, images, entry and migration
MaintenanceUpdate responsibility, recovery and routine edits

WordPress software being available without a license purchase does not make these other lines disappear. Conversely, a premium extension is not automatically necessary: ask which requirement it meets and whether the standard setup already covers it.

Calculate one defined example

Consider an invented USD planning scenario: $3,600 implementation, $800 content preparation, $25 monthly hosting, $24 annual domain renewal, $180 annual extension renewals and $100 monthly care. The first-year total is $6,104: $4,400 in launch work plus $1,704 in recurring costs. Taxes, paid advertising and later features are excluded.

This is not a typical market price. Replace every input with your actual quotes and remove duplicate items. If the care plan includes extension renewals, do not count them a second time. If you maintain the site yourself, separate the cash saving from the hours you will spend.

Make maintainability part of the quote

Ask the supplier to explain how an editor changes a service page and what happens when a key extension is updated. Request a record of licenses, account access and the recovery process. A site that only its original developer can safely edit may create an ongoing dependency you did not intend.

For a simple information site, an adapted theme may be sufficient. A store, booking workflow or membership product needs its own acceptance criteria and should not be priced as a basic brochure site with an unexplained plugin allowance.

Start with the small-business website calculator, then add verified operating costs. SiteCost's CMS selection is a planning category, not a platform-specific WordPress quotation.
