Keep the comparison fair
Start with the same pages, forms, languages and content responsibilities. Comparing a self-built Wix brochure site with a custom WordPress design mainly measures a difference in scope and labor. Specify which tasks are internal and which are paid in both options.
For WordPress, distinguish a self-managed installation from a managed package. For Wix, check the current paid plan and selected apps against your requirements. Neither a free software download nor an advertised monthly subscription represents the whole cost of a finished business website.
Use one comparison worksheet
| Cost or responsibility | Wix scenario | WordPress scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Initial implementation | Quote the agreed pages and workflows | Quote the same pages and workflows |
| Ongoing services | Verify plan and app renewals | Verify hosting, domain and extension renewals |
| Routine editing | Measure editor time on a real task | Measure the same task |
| Maintenance | Identify your remaining responsibilities | Identify application and hosting responsibilities |
| Future change | Check the required capability | Check the required capability |
| Moving later | Inspect available exports and gaps | Inspect files, database and dependencies |
Use “not confirmed” where you lack evidence. Do not assign automatic zeros because a supplier says the platform is easy to use.
Calculate cash cost and time separately
In an invented 24-month comparison, option A has $1,200 setup and $55 monthly services: $2,520 cash cost. Option B has $2,400 setup and $35 monthly services: $3,240. These labels are deliberately neutral; they are not vendor prices or evidence that one platform always costs less.
If A requires 48 hours of your team's time and B requires 20, the difference is 28 hours. At your own planning value of $40 an hour, that difference is $1,120. It exceeds the $720 cash gap. This does not make the more expensive option automatically better; it makes the hidden trade-off visible. Do not add staff time as an external invoice unless it is actually paid that way.
Choose with a small real task
Ask whoever will maintain the website to edit a service page, add an image and check a form submission in each proposed setup. Review the accessibility and mobile experience of the actual implementation, rather than making a blanket claim about the platform.
Choose the option that supports the required workflow and a sustainable ownership model. Use the first-year planner for cash commitments and keep a separate record of internal hours. Recheck renewal terms before purchasing either option.
